Bat Thing

This is a polymer clay sculpture of a bat creature, inspired at least in part, by the bat creature from Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

I airbrushed the sculpey with various blues, greens, yellows and reds. The colouring came out quite subtle I think and looks quite realistic, so I’m keen to do some more larger scale sculptures.

Here’s a quick video of the piece prior to painting

Here are some in progress shots.

I didn’t have much of an idea for how this was going to look before I started making this. In fact the original idea for this was that I was going to blast it with a heat gun. I’d noticed a while ago that if you hit sculpey with a heat gun it goes lumpy like textured skin. So I was going to create a scaley/burnt skin type creature. As it turned out the sculpture ended up with quite a gentle look and so the skin idea didn’t seem appropriate.

As I didn’t want to use a heat gun to cook the clay and because it was too big to fit in to the oven I had to come up with a way to cook it. I ended up opening the oven door and building a foil ‘tent’ over the front that covered the sculpture. That way the heat from the oven filled the tent and cooked the sculpture.
